Please click here for final places and round by round score breakdown.

For once there was no runaway leader and the competition was neck and neck throughout. At the end, though the result was determined by an excellent Marathon performance by the eventual winners, the Adult Players Combination, who scored 86 points out of a possible 87. Congratulations to them, commiserations to the runners up and well done the Under 15’s for maintaining their record of last place finishes – They only come for the fun-sized chocolate bars!

Some observations (no names):-

  • Nelson Mandela did not spend his prison life on Rhodes.

  • Some people appear to spend too much time in front of the TV.

  • Paul McCartney did not shoot John Lennon – although Linda McCartney might have wanted to (allegedly).

  • WG Grace never played at The Riverside.

  • 4 Questions were answered incorrectly by every team

    • 4 x 400 relay is the closest athletic distance to 1 mile

    • There are 324 possible results in ‘Cluedo’.

    • 'Tony the Tiger’ wrestled Big Daddy, bowled out Ian Botham and saved a penalty from Gary Lineker

    • The Channel Tunnel opened in 1994

  • ‘Foyles War’ was not the answer to any question!

Apologies to those who had to stand for all or part of the evening – we will try to do better next time.

Thanks go to

  • Those who contributed the prizes for the raffle.

  • Coral, Jenny, Brian & Dave for running the bar.

  • The ladies who helped with the distribution of the buffet

  • The Under 15 lads who sold the raffle tickets and cleared up the rubbish.

Overall, including the money from the raffle, the profit on the night is around £300, to which should be added the bar profits. We very much appreciate the support of the regulars, and it was nice to see some new faces. We hope you will come again. Another Quiz Night is lined up for the end of January 2006. Watch the Internet for news.

Bentley's 2005 Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 21st November 2005 at the Clubhouse.  It will begin around 7:30pm and is open to all members.  With the Colt membership structured as it is, Family members of Colts are also more than welcome to attend.  The meeting will include a yearly review of the Club's performance, election of 2006 officers, and also a summary of the major issues which will affect the Club during the 2006 season.  During the evening there may be issues to be voted upon, and it is Club policy that only playing members over the age of 16 can vote on issues affecting the playing of Cricket.

If there are issues you wish to raise or items you wish to have added to the Agenda, please contact either Martin Larrett (Chairman), or Les Pulford (Hon. Secretary), their numbers can be found on the Contact BCC page.

15th October 2005

Bentley's first Jack Petchey Awards Evening was held on Saturday 15th October 2005 at the Clubhouse.  The evenings guest from the Foundation was Lee Thompson.  This special event gave the Club an opportunity to show its thanks to the past 20 winners and also the chance to show its gratitude to the Jack Petchey Foundation.  The Club organised food to be laid on, using the caterers Fantastique, who obliged in providing a superb buffet to complement a very enjoyable evening.

For more details of the event please go to the Jack Petchey pages within the Club Honours section of this website.  There you will find photos, a list of winners, and a list of the benefits gained from the Foundation so far.

31st August 2005

The annual Colin Neal Trophy was held at the club on Bank Holiday Monday. A new format was tried this year, a double wicket knockout tournament involving colts and their dads (or another older member of their family).
Thankfully the day was sunny and warm and 16 pairs battled it out under cloudless skies. The Colemans were an early casualty, a damaged finger causing them to withdraw, and the Pagetts also fell at the first hurdle.
Into the quarter finals, with the Navens despatching the Courtnells, the Bateson/Leak combination disposing of the Lawrences, the scratch pairing of Reid & Hawes winning against the Woodrows and the Crispins beating the Sprules. Two well fought semi finals left us with a final match up of Naven versus Crispin, with the Naven combination coming out on top. Well done, Steve & Charlie, and commiserations, Ellis & Ian.

These events cannot take place without people being prepared to give up some of their time to ensure that the day runs smoothly. Thanks therefore go to Martin Larrett, Dave Guthrie, Gavin Hammond, Keith Lawrence & Steve Sprules for umpiring, Steve Pagett for wicketkeeping all day, Steve Coleman for running the bar most of the afternoon & Brian, Coral, Jenny & Dave for their usual excellent barbecue. No doubt there were severe recriminations in many of the cars on the way home (no, children CANNOT divorce their parents! - or vice versa!) but, I think, a good time was had by all.

As the tournament overran somewhat, the Ladies vs Gents Rounders Match took place whilst the semi finals were going on. This resulted in (yet another) win for the Men. No surprise there, then.

18th July 2005

The 2005 Max Taylor competition is now drawing to a close with the 2 leagues having almost being finalised.  We have made it through the league stage as winners of Group 1, with Shenfield coming with us a runners up.  The other league will have Hutton as winners and Old Brentwoods as runners up.  This therefore means that on the 31st July, at the Finals Day, we will be playing Old Brentwoods in the first Semi Final at 10:00am.  The finals day should be a good event with the bar open, Barbecue, and hopefully plenty of action on the field.  The days program is outlined on the cup page and hopefully there will be plenty of Club members present on the day.  Players for the team will be needed as well as a plenty of supporters.  To make this day a success it is going to need assistance from Club members to avoid major delays, e.g. searching for balls or moving sight screens.

The finals day should be a good way to finish off the 2005 Max Taylor competition so I look forward to seeing you there.

13th June 2005

The latest news on the Shepherd Neame sponsored Twenty 20 competition is that our first round match has been arranged for Tuesday 21st June.  It is a 6:00pm start away at Loughton so the meet for the match will be at 5:15pm.  There is prize money up for grabs so you participation is needed to ensure we can get out the strongest side possible.

Please visit the Loughton website for the grounds location.  I am sure you will all notice that this game is a day after our first match in our own Max Taylor cup, so hopefully many members can make themselves available for both of the games and if not, then at least one.  They are going to be 2 hard games and hence we will need to have our strongest side possible on each day.

27th May 2005

Annual Subs are now overdue and failure to pay quickly will mean non selection for games.  Please bear in mind that the season has now been going for almost 2 months and all funds are urgently needed to keep our Club's facilities up to the high standard we are all used to.  This years rates are the same as last years, please see below, and as you will notice the full playing subs will go up by £10 if not paid within the next 4 days.  Any subs not paid by next weekend will be part of the name and shame policy to identify outstanding subs.

Full Playing Member (if paid before 31st May) £70
Full Playing Member (if paid after 31st May) £80
Student Member (Over 18) & Unemployed £40
Under 18 £35
Under 13 £25
Non-Playing Member £10

Cheques for the above amounts should be made payable to "Bentley Cricket Club", and then given to the Club's Treasurer, Brian Pagett, or to any of the lead coaches: Brian Coleman; Martin Larrett; or Nick Hammond.

Thank you for your support.

15th May 2005

Just to let all members know that the Brentwood & Romford Recorders are now showing our match results in detail.  They will also be following the Max Taylor 20 Twenty cup competition.

10th May 2005

The latest news on the Shepherd Neame sponsored Twenty 20 competition is as follows:
37 clubs have entered the competition, approximately 20 are from the Shepherd Neame league.  It will be played in area groups until one club is left in that group.  It will then continue with the group winners playing and there is also a good possibility that the Semi-Finals & Final will be played at the County Ground, Chelmsford on September 24th 2005.

Please visit the competition home page on the Shepherd Neame website to see the details, rules, and draw.  As you will see we are in Group D with: Brentwood; Buckhurst Hill; Epping; Hutton; Loughton; Shenfield; and South Loughton.  Our first round game is away to Loughton and is due to be played during the first week of June, fixture confirmation to follow.

I am sure you will all notice that the fixtures are due to start at 5.30pm so quite early for a lot of people.  Obviously with this being a knockout competition it is crucial to get a good side out, so hopefully people will be able to get out of work early to make themselves available and give us a strong side.

7th May 2005

The first weekend of league fixtures brought four great victories for Bentley.  It was made even more sweeter as it was the first time we fielded four T-Rippon league sides, two of which played at the Coxtie Green Road ground.  Please see the results page to see the details of each game.

We also competed in our first Village Cup game of the season on Sunday which unfortunately brought defeat and an early exit from the competition.  This means that Horndon-On-The-Hill go through to the next round where they will meet Great & Little Warley or Tollesbury.

15th April 2005

Friday night BBQ's will be starting on the 22nd April and continue throughout the season, weather permitting.

There will also be an equipment sale evening on Friday 22nd April starting at around 6.30pm.  VK Sports will be at the pavilion selling equipment from their 2005 catalogue and taking orders if necessary.

8th April 2005

Just to give you an update about the professional coach, we have now confirmed with him to start on Thursday 28th April at 6.30pm.

Now that we will have more structured training sessions, it was thought that we may wish to look a bit more professional too. It has been suggested that members may even like to purchase training shirts & shorts for this seasons training nights. The cost will be approximately £18 for shirts and £12.50 for shorts. They will be in the club colours and have the Club logo on.

The main colouring is navy blue with a single yellow stripe down each side, and they are made of an airtex type of material. Adam Lucas has a sample of both if you wish to view the items.

To get the kit in time for the season it is vital for Adam or Nick to be advised as soon as possible of any interest for this new clothing. Therefore can you contact Adam or Nick, by phone on 01277 373133 or e-mail as above, if you are interested in ordering either of the items.

1st April 2005

Hi Everyone,

With the season nearly being upon us I thought I would send out an update of what is coming up in the next couple of weeks.  Les will be sending out official letters next week which will cover some additional topics so please read them upon receipt, but to give you all an early heads up to ensure you can all make the certain dates I thought an e-mail would help.

1)  There will be working parties on the following weekends, 2nd/3rd April & 9th/10th April, where a large amount of work needs to be done due to the increased use the Club's facilities will now have and also because of the introduction of a professional Coach.  Some items to be covered are:

  • A new changing facility for the 2nd pitch to be prepared;
  • Improving netting facilities (surfaces and framework);
  • Repairing of main sightscreens;
  • Internal and external decoration of the clubhouse;
  • Clearing out of unwanted items from the shed and clubhouse;
  • Movement of Nicks fence for the additional parking requirements;
  • Sorting out of the 2nd pitch sightscreens, netting, etc;
  • Possible scoreboard improvements (location and layout), etc.

So as you can see the list above only covers the big tasks.  As well as that there is the usual litter picking and general preparation necessary.

2) The first friendly matches are on the weekend of the 16th/17th April, weather permitting.  This being the case, and with adult training sessions plus selection being on a Thursday this season, the first training session is scheduled to be on the  7th April, which is only 2 weeks away.  This would be without the coach but it is vital for us to get back into the swing of things earlier this year as to make best use of the Coach when he does begin.

3) The first training session with Keith Goodman, the professional Coach, has not been scheduled yet but initial thoughts are that it would be around the last Thursday in April, giving him a possible 2 sessions to whip us up into an extremely competitive state ready for the first league games on 7th May.

4) There is a pre-season social event with Barbecue scheduled for the night of the first friendly match, on Saturday 16th April starting at 7.30pm, so please try to make an appearance even if you are not intending to play the first couple of friendlies.

5) Finally, I am not sure how many of you look at the league website News page during the winter, but if you have you may have noticed that the Shepherd Neame are sponsoring an Essex wide 20/20 midweek knockout competition.  We have entered for this and await details of our first fixture.  This will mean with our own Max Taylor 20/20 league competition also being run this season there will be even more midweek games being played by Bentley.

Many thanks for your time, and see you all soon.

Mark
