BENTLEY CC - NEWS During 2006

13th October 2006

The Winter Quiz Nights got off to a great start with a very tight competition on Friday 13th (unlucky for some, eh, U16s - but more of that later).

Eight teams of various sizes made up the competition, as follows:

Team 1 - Adult players (Johnson T, Johnson G, Redman, Windley, Coleman S & Coleman M)
Team 2 - Whiteley/Cozens/Stimpson
Team 3 - Smith/Romaine/Churchill
Team 4 - Wilson/Brown
Team 5 - Pagett
Team 6 - Woodrow/Page
Team 7 - U16s (and U13s)
Team 8 - Geggus

Please click here for final places and round by round score breakdown.

Another very competitive quiz, then - it was nip and tuck all the way through - at the half way stage 4 teams were separated by 2 points, however one of those had already played their second joker. After the interval, '2003' seemed to separate the men from the boys, as did 'Cinema'. After round 10, Table 3 led Table 4 by 4 points with just the marathon scores to come, however the margin was cut to nothing after these scores were added in. So consecutive quizzes have gone to a tie break. We wanted to know 'the lowest individual score never made in a test match'. The answer was 229, however table 4 didn't seem to understand the question and offered '1', so Table 3 triumphed with a guess in the 140's. Well done, The Smiths, Romaines & Churchills!

Poor performances on the Cricket Marathon saw Table 5 slip right out of the reckoning and Table 6 triumph(?) over The U16s (Table 7) to take the Booby Prize. For the first time in living memory the U16s (previously known as the U13s and the U15s) didn't come last. For the first time, Andrew & Philip left the Pagett team and joined the U16s. For the first time in 3 quizzes, The Pagetts didn't win. Are these events connected, we ask ourselves. Congratulations, Woodrows & Pages, hope you enjoyed denying the kids their sweets.

6 Questions were answered incorrectly by all teams

  1. Omphalitis is an affliction of the navel

  2. The Mountains of Malpighi are found in the kidneys (given the fact that 3 options were provided, you might have expected that one team would get it right)

  3. In Fawlty Towers, Polly's surname was 'Sherman'

  4. Robert Pires scored the only goal in the 2003 Cup Final

  5. The Full Monty Dance Troup was 'Hot Metal' - (not 'Team Stevie Cozens', surprisingly enough)

  6. The last book of the Old Testament is 'Malachi'

In addition, no team identified The Slag Brothers or Kurt Cobain in the picture rounds (some wonderful suggestions for the latter, but 'Sue Barker'??????)

Some Observations:

  • Team 3 got the first nine questions right in Round 1, but unfortunately couldn't add up.

  • Charing Cross is not in Cambridge

  • Despite even looking on a RAC membership card, one team (no names, but if you rearrange the two words before these brackets....) couldn't even come up with one of the words to match the initials.

  • The answers to the Television round give a lie to the idea that we are a nation of TV watchers.

  • David Attenborough would be very interested to learn of an antelope called a 'Diadora'.

  • 2003 was only 3 years ago, not that you would know from the answers (well done the U16s for being the only team to get the correct space shuttle)

  • Foyle's War wasn't the answer to any of the questions - Sorry, U16s.

  • The only team that did not appear to hear Andrew Pagett giving the name of the other 16 year old goalscorer were mum & dad's team - perhaps that's down to years of switching off whenever they hear their son's voice (well, it works for us & Phil)

Our thanks go to:

  • Gavin for running the bar single-handed and for getting the new mike. What a big improvement that made.

  • Everyone who donated a raffle prize.

  • Those that helped with the food.

  • Those that couldn't make the evening, but still paid their ticket money.

  • Steves Cozens & Pagett for selling the raffle tickets (we'll get someone else to do it next time - promise)

  • Andrew again for the MC duties on the raffle (perhaps the new mike is not such a good idea - it lets him go walkabout)

Profit on the night was £240, to which can be added the bar profits. Thanks to everyone for coming. Hopefully you picked up the 'flyer' about the next quiz night and we hope to see you all on December 8th

BENTLEY C.C.  FUNDRAISING - NEW WEBSHOP

Exciting news! We’re delighted to announce our new fundraising initiative, the Bentley CC webshop. When shopping online, you can now support your club by accessing over 100 leading retailers - such as BT, Thorntons, Marks & Spencer and John Lewis - using our webshop. Every time you go to a retailer’s web site through our webshop and subsequently buy something, you’ll automatically earn money for the Club! Contributions vary but typically we earn around 5 pence for every pound spent and the good news is that you don’t pay anything extra by using our webshop, so please try to use it whenever you can.

If like me you’re a struggling student and only have time on your hands as opposed to money to spend, then completing the online survey only takes around ten minutes, costs you nothing and earns the club 90 pence per survey. With over 100+ members that’s over £100 for ten minutes of everybody’s time. Not bad for ten minutes work eh? This can be found under the A-Z section on the site and then scrolling down to the Consumer Products Survey.

To access our webshop and start earning money for your club visit www.buy.at/Bentleycc or alternatively links will be posted on the club website shortly.

Please spread the word to all members, friends and family and happy shopping!!

Thank you for your support!

4th April 2006

Now the Club are utilising the services of a professional coach for a second season running it was decided that it may be suitable for a training kit to be available.  This has been investigated and the Club are now selling a whites and tracksuit package, all for only £30.

1st April 2006

With the season nearly being on us I thought I would give an update of what is coming up in the next couple of weeks.

1) There will be working parties on the following weekends, 8th/9th April & 15th/16th April, where a large amount of work needs to be done due to the increased use the Club's facilities will again have and also because of the continued use of a professional Coach. Some items to be covered are:

  • Improving netting facilities (surfaces and framework);

  • Ensuring freestanding netting facilities are accessible and in good condition;

  • Putting up of nets over fixed framework and the mobile cage;

  • Repairing and painting of main sightscreens;

  • Internal and external decoration of the clubhouse and 4th team facility;

  • Cleaning of all Patio furniture.

So as you can see the list above only covers the big tasks. As well as that there is the usual litter picking and general preparation necessary.

2) The first friendly matches are on the weekend of the 22nd/23rd April, weather permitting. This being the case, and with adult training sessions plus selection being on a Thursday again this season, the first training session is scheduled to be on the 13th April, which is only just over 1 week away. This would be without the coach but it is vital for us to get back into the swing of things earlier this year as to make best use of the Coach when he does begin.

3) The first training session with Keith Goodman, the professional Coach, has not been scheduled yet but initial thoughts are that it would be around the last Thursday in April, giving him a possible 2 sessions to whip us up into an extremely competitive state ready for the first league games on 6th May.

24th March 2006

Friday March 24th saw the 3rd and final Quiz Night of the winter. Again, very well supported (thank you regulars), it was a pleasure to welcome the Allen, Cross & Hickey families to Bentley for the first time.

Teams

Table 1 – Pagetts/Larret/Coleman

Table 2 – The U15s

Table 3 – Smith/Churchill/Romaine/Brown

Table 4 – Acheson & Friends

Table 5 – Allen/Cross/Hickey

Table 6 – Cozens/Jacobs/Whiteley/Wilding

Please click here for final places and round by round score breakdown.

If the last quiz was close, this one was even tighter. A points difference of 2 between Tables 1 & 6 going into the last round, ‘Pot Luck’, looked decisive, as this topic had always proved to be difficult in the past. Knowing what a Vexillogist was interested in (‘Flags’, apparently) was crucial, helping Table 6 to 9 points out of 10 and enabling them to equal Table 1 on 145 points each. For the first time in 8 quizzes therefore, we had a tiebreak. The teams had to decide, or guess, how many test caps Marcus Trescothick has won to date. Table 6 went for 47, but the competition was won by Table 1 with a guess of 60, which was the closest to the actual number, 69. Well done the Karen, Brian & Andrew Pagett, Martin Larrett and Matt & Phil Coleman, who won for the 2nd quiz running and therefore can call themselves Bentley Masterminds 2005/06.

Six questions on the evening were answered incorrectly by all 6 teams:

  1. Damien’s surname in ‘The Omen’ was ‘Thorn’ (not ‘Pagett’, Gav)
  2. The meat (?) ingredient in Faggots is Liver.
  3. James Bond’s family motto, and title of one of the films, is ‘The World Is Not Enough’.
  4. Detective ‘Jack’ Frost’s real Christian name is ‘William’.
  5. ‘The Mission Is A Man’ was the tag line from ‘Saving Private Ryan’.
  6. ‘From Zero to Hero’ came from The Mask.

Some observations:

  • The only team that didn’t know David Beckham’s Real Madrid shirt number was the one team you would have expected to get it – shame on you, U15s.

  • Essex CC didn’t get promotion, let alone win County Championship Division 2.
  • Bridget Jones did write Bridget Jones’ Diary, obviously enough, but that wasn’t the question, was it?
  • Del Boy should have said’ The World Is Your Lobster’, but he didn’t.
  • Northampton is not in Yorkshire.
  • The Connections round is obviously far too easy.

Profit on the evening, including the Woodrows paying for their tickets even though they were too ill to attend (many thanks) and a donation from Table 3’s whip, was approximately £300 and the bar took £250. Profits this time will go towards financing the U13 Tour to Sheringham. Our thanks on the night go to:

  • Gavin for running the bar virtually single-handed – thanks, mate.
  • Cathy for helping with the food.
  • Steve Cozens, Steve Pagett & Ben Jacobs for selling the raffle tickets
  • Elise Whiteley & Sarah Cozens for MC duties (made a nice change from Andrew – only joking, ‘Scholesy).
  • All those who donated prizes for the raffle – this brought in £86, which was all profit.
  • St Anne Line School (again) for the loudspeaker – no feedback this time, thank goodness.

Thanks to everyone who supported the 3 quizzes this winter. We have enjoyed putting them on, and it appears to us that those who have come have found them entertaining. The result has been that over £1,000 has been added to club funds, which at a time of considerable expansion – and cost – is gratefully received. Whilst the clubhouse is at its present size, we will restrict future quiz nights to an absolute maximum of 55 people, as it is clear that this is the largest number that can be accommodated comfortably. We hope to see you at the end of September for the next quiz.

Sharon & Brian Coleman

P.S. – Just to confirm, ‘The Toys Are Back In Town’ WAS the tagline to ‘Toy Story’ and not ‘Toy Story II’ – see www.imdb.com/title/tt0114709. You just can’t get the staff, can you!

The tag line for ‘Toy Story 2’, if anyone is interested, was ‘The Toys Are Back’.

27th January 2006

With a restricted entry, the winter’s second quiz night was a slightly more comfortable affair, with everyone being able to be seated. Last times winners declining the opportunity to defend their title, the competition quickly turned into a 3 horse race between Tables 1, 2 & 3.

Team 1 – Pagett/Geggus/Larret/Coleman
Team 2 – Smith/Brown/Churchill
Team 3 – Cozens/Jacobs/Stimpson/Whiteley/Wilding
Team 4 – Sprules/Jarvis/Beaney
Team 5 – Woodrow/Page
Team 6 – The U15s
Team 7 – Wilson/Lucas/Johnson/Hammond

Please click here for final places and round by round score breakdown.

Coming into the last round and taking the Marathons into account, the 3 teams were separated by 1 solitary point and we thought we might at last get a chance to use the tie-break question. It was not to be. A magnificent 10 out of 10 by Table 1 clinched the competition, the difference being that they knew that Paul Hewson is better known as Bono, and the other 2 teams didn’t. A very tight finish, and a good job that our maths was up to scratch!

The Under 15’s may well have maintained their 100% record for last place finishes, however they were the only team to get Question 20 of the TV Marathon Anagrams (‘THIS HOLY RELEVANT KIT’ translating into ‘They Think It’s All Over’ – well done Steve Pagett, we understand). And yes, there was a Foyles War question, and yes, they did get it right!

As last time, only 4 Questions were answered incorrectly by every team

  • ‘The First Casualty of War is Innocence’ was the tagline from the film ‘Platoon’
  • ‘Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid’, was the tagline from ‘The Fly’
  • The item last used in the 1973 Cup final was an orange ball (many weird and wonderful answers for this one, but ‘Substitutes’?????)
  • Bananarama was the group who took their name from a children’s TV programme (‘The Banana Splits’) and a Roxy Music song (‘Pyjamarama’)

Our thanks go to

  • Teresa Geggus for the buffet
  • Jenny & Dave Wilson for running the bar.
  • Those who contributed the prizes for the raffle.
  • St Anne Line School for the use of the speaker.
  • Matt Coleman and Steve Cozens for selling the raffle tickets and Andrew Pagett for the MC duties
  • Everyone who stayed behind afterwards to help clear up.

Apologies for the feedback from the speaker - it was like being at a Status Quo concert!

Overall, including the money from the raffle, the profit on the night is around £275, to which should be added the bar profits, so hopefully we will have made in the region of £400. Thanks to all those ‘regulars’ who always support our functions and to those who were coming for the first time. We hope to see you all next time. We will try to have another Quiz Night before the season starts. Details will be on the Internet and at Winter Nets.

4th January 2006

Hope you had a good Christmas but the cricket season is approaching upon us fast so it's time to burn off those extra calories from the festive period.

The Winter nets will be held at Billericay Cricket Club, Blunts Wall Road.  They are beginning on Wednesday 11th January at 8pm.

As in previous years the net session will last from 8pm to 9pm. There will be twelve sessions running from the 11th to the beginning of the outdoor season in April.

There will be two nets available with 6 people in each. So there are twelve places available each week.

I will aim to have nets of equal ability due to new members and those with limited experience so please feel welcome to contact me.

If you wish to do winter nets please do not hesitate to contact me.  It would be also helpful if you could specify how many sessions you would like. Three is generally the maximum, although depending on the response this is open to change.

If you wish to attend the cost is £4 per session and I will contact you to specify how much money you owe and the dates of your sessions.  Unlike previous years, the money must be paid in advance and a cheque made payable to Bentley Cricket Club, there will be no collecting of money on the night so please send the cheque to my address.

Due to the nets starting early I will need all responses back by the 7th January. If any week there is a cancellation then I will offer it up to those who are not involved in that session and it will be on a first come first serve basis. Also any cancellations and any dates that need changing must be made aware to me ASAP so I can re-allocate the sessions.

If you are interested please contact me at either of the following e-mail addresses: chris@geggus99.freeserve.co.uk or Colweafer@aol.com.  Alternatively if you do not have an e-mail address at 10 Talbrook, Brentwood, Essex, CM14 4PY

Many Thanks

Michael Geggus
