BENTLEY CC - NEWS During 2007 |
30th November 2007
Friday 30th November saw the first of the Winter Quiz Nights.
Unfortunately, two teams dropping out at the last minute meant a reduced
number of participants however 7 teams still took part.
Table 1 - Woodrows/Pages/ Matt Coleman
Table 2 - Johnson/Pulford/Pether
Table 3 - Pagetts
Table 4 - Larkins/Hutchings/Peberdy
Table 5 - Smith/Churchill
Table 6 - Smith/Brown/Romaine
Table 7 - Phil Coleman, Andy Pagett, Greg
Larkin, Toby Bacon, Charlie Yorke

Unlike previous quizzes, one team (Table 3) led virtually all the way through, however by Round 10, Table 4 had taken a slight lead, with only the Marathons to come. Unfortunately for those two teams, they had no-one to match Matt Coleman's encyclopaedic (some might use the work 'anorak' here) knowledge of James Bond and with 19 marks out of a possible 22, and a good performance on the Picture Quizzes, Table 1 nicked the competition by 3 points. Well done Table 1, Worst to First since the last Quiz. Honourable mentions go to the Pagetts with a second place with only 3 members (maybe Andrew would have helped - then again........) and to Table 4 on their first appearance at a Bentley Quiz - we hope they come again. Needless to say, the youngsters won the booby prize, but as this was 'umpteen' packets of chocolate (and that is what they came for after all) perhaps they were also winners on the night. A very close competition with 5 of the 7 teams within 11 points of each other.
13 Questions were answered incorrectly by all teams
1) Paul Young, Kylie Minogue & Chris
Martin sung the opening lines on the 3 Band Aid versions of 'Do They
Know It's Christmas'
2) Walt Disney has the most Oscar statuettes (must admit that I am
surprised no-one got this)
3) Frankie Dunn, Maggie Fitzgerald & Eddie
'Scrap Iron' Dupris were characters in 'Million Dollar Baby'
4) St Sylvester's Day is better known as New
Years Eve
5) Tony Blair's band was The Ugly Rumours
(his band, not his wife!)
6) The Independent is the newspaper with the
emblem of an eagle clutching a newspaper
7) Wilma Flintstone's maiden name was 'Slaghoople'
8) Eastenders is in the fictional Postal
District of 'E20'
9) Dum Dum airport is in Calcutta (or
Kolkata as it is now known)
10) The Brooklyn Bridge spans the East River
11) Thistle Alpha was the oil rig that
caught fire
12) Peter Watt was the Labour Party's
General Secretary who resigned
13) No-one got Mr Noisy in the Mr Men
Picture Quiz
Observations
Our thanks go to
Graham Hawes & Trevor Yorke for running the bar (and buying entry tickets)
Profit on the night was just over £120 including the raffle, with another £200 over the bar.

Entertainment was again provided by Kingdom Leisure in the form of a large Bouncy Castle, Gladiator Pods & what appeared to be a 'Wall of Death', which was all funded by the Club Committee. Thanks to everyone who had helped at matches in umpiring, scoring & generally getting the ground ready. Thanks also to those who had served on the bar throughout one of the club's busiest ever summers, and finally to those who had worked the BBQ, some couples on 3 or 4 occasions.

Bentley
U13's are League Champions
After a resounding victory at Hutton on Tuesday, Bentley U13's secured the Central Essex League A title for the sixth time in the last eight year. The success of the side has been built on a mature batting approach that asks all members of the side to contribute to the innings and on tight, straight bowling that offers the variety of both pace and spin. Superbly led by Captain Philip Coleman the team has beaten a number of very strong sides in the Central District this season. The team has also reached the semi-final of the District Cup (match to be played on 24th August at Chelmer Park, 5.30pm), and narrowly lost the Essex County Championship semi-final in June. A superb achievement! With a record of 15 wins in 17 games the squad look forward to the remaining games this season. They now have a well deserved break until 19th August.

The 'Get the Club Ready Day' went ahead as planned and was a great success.
The Bentley CC committee would like to thank all those that attended and took part in the day. We would also like to give thanks to Travis Perkins who supplied various paint and the wood to re-new the sightscreens.
The work carried out during the day showed how much can be accomplished with a bit of team work.
Many thanks for all your hard work,

Dear
Club Member,
Shirt Sponsorship 2007
I am delighted to inform you that the club has signed a 2 year shirt sponsorship deal with The Raffle Club. Com worth £3000. New club shirts for 2007, carrying the club logo and sponsorship logo are available from TED FENTON SPORTS in Brentwood High Street from 1st April 07. The club committee strongly encourage you as a playing member to purchase a new cricket shirt for 2007. It is hoped that all league sides will be kitted in the new shirt, as soon as it is practical. This sponsorship deal will be used to invest in brand new nets and surfaces. This will support the infrastructure of the club, in its endeavors to sustain a progression of outstanding youth cricketers into our league sides. I urge you to support this by purchasing a shirt from Ted Fenton's. All other crested kit is also available from Ted Fenton's.

Fantasy Cricket League
This season we are starting up our own Fantasy Cricket League. This is something that we did many years ago and hopefully this time it will be as big a success as it was in the past. The competition is open to members, friends,
family, you name them they can have a team. The more entries we have the greater the prizes will be.
The provisional prize levels for the Fantasy Cricket League are as follows:
1st Prize = £75
2nd Prize = £45
3rd Prize = £25
Monthly Prize for Team of the Month = £10 per month
Weekly Prize for Team of the Week = £5 per week
As I am sure you are all aware the idea is that you select 11 Bentley C.C. players, following the rules outlined, and give your team a name. Your players will score points, well hopefully they do but it all depends on whom you pick!
To be in with a chance of winning all you need to do is enter. The entry fee is only £10 per team, although anyone under the age of 15 has the choice of a £10 or £5 team. Any £5 team entries will only be entitled to half of any prize won. For more details see www.bentleycc.co.uk
Thank you for your continued membership of Bentley CC. I hope you enjoy our season tremendously.
Best wishes
M.P. Larrett
(Chairman on behalf of your committee)
9th March 2007
The final quiz night of the winter took
place on Friday 9th March with six teams taking part.

Table 4 – Pagetts/ Phil Coleman/Charlie Yorke
Table 5 – Goslings & Co
Table 6 – Johnson/Pulford/Windley

Well, scoring was nip and tuck all the way through, with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions. At the end of Round 10, 9 points separated 4 teams, with just the two Marathon scores to be added in. A poor performance on Marathon 1 by Table 6 was compensated for by them being the highest scorers in Marathon 2, leading to a tie-break for the third time in four quizzes (I can add up, honest!), this time between Tables 3 and 6. The tie-break question was ‘How many runs did Monty Panesar score in the 2006/2007 Ashes tests?’ Table 3 went for 12, with Table 6 going for 20. With the actual answer being 35, Table 6 sneaked home. Well done!
With 2 first places and a runners up spot, the Smiths, Browns, Churchill etc can lay claim to the title of Bentley Quiz Champions 2006/07 (no prizes, just a sense of smugness). With 3 last places, lets just say that the Woodrows/Pages can’t! (I bet they miss the U16s!)
8 questions were answered incorrectly by all teams.
Now for the observations:
Pluto is not the alternative name for the Dog Star.
Sport doesn’t seem to be our strong subject – only 39 points gained out of a possible 60.
A sport with 4 letters that starts with a ‘Tee’ – yes, its ‘GOLF’, Gozz
Cincinnati is in the USA and therefore is nowhere near the River Nile!
We seem to have the same memory block with women police officers that we do with women cricketers.
Only one team knew that PC McGarry’s beat was on Camberwick Green – not sure I’d own up to knowing that – most of the other teams went for Trumpton.
Only 31 points out of a possible 60 on Literature – perhaps we should stay in more!
Contrary to what you were lead to believe on the night, Sean Bean really isn’t that gorgeous.
Not sure how ‘Abbey Road’ has a ‘weapons’ connection (‘Taxman’ + ‘Eleanor Rigby’ = ‘REVOLVER’)
I’d like to know how the French word for ‘Pomegranate’ (which is actually ‘grenade’) leads to ‘Potato Gun’.
The less said about the TV Years Marathon (41 points out of 120) the better.
Now the ‘thank yous’
Trevor Yorke & Graham Hawes for running the bar.
Cathy Smith for helping with the food.
All donations of raffle prizes.
Andrew & Philip for selling the raffle tickets (again) and Andrew for MC duties on the raffle (yet again).
Those who stayed behind to help clear up.
Our thanks also go to everyone who has supported the quizzes over the winter. Including the take from the raffle, Friday night’s quiz made a profit of £185, with over £200 taken over the bar. The club has therefore profited to the tune of about £1,000 from the 3 winter quizzes. Now that cricket will be getting in the way, ‘Quiz Nights’ go into hibernation for the next 6 months. See you next time.

There are different ways for players to score points and the transferring of players later in the season is also allowed. The competition home page has all the rules; entry forms, player lists, and will in good time show all the league tables and stats.
To be in with a chance of winning all you need to do is enter. The entry fee is only £10 per team, although anyone under the age of 15 has the choice of a £10 or £5 team. Any £5 team entries will only be entitled to half of any prize won.
I look forward to receiving your entries and good luck for the season.

26th January 2007
The first quiz of 2007 took place on Friday 26th
January, replacing the one cancelled just before Christmas. Numbers were
slightly down on last time however a total of 39 paying customers was a
highly creditable effort and we thank you for this. Most of our regulars
were present and it was nice to welcome the Gordons to their first Bentley
Quiz. There was also the added bonus of having one team split into two
and ending in a private 'Girls against Boys' (or should that be 'WaGs vs
Lags' - suggestions on a post card for the meaning of 'Lags' please) battle.
Table 1 - Geggi
Table 2 - Woodrows
Table 3 - WaGs (The Misses Smith, Romaine, Churchill, Brown etc)
Table 4 - Lags (The Misters Smith. Romaine, Churchill, Brown etc)
Table 5 - Johnsons, Windley, Pulford & friends
Table 6 - Pagetts & Coleman

As usual the overall result came down to careful playing of the two
available jokers, together with picking up as many points as possible from
the two marathon rounds. In checking through the scores, Teams 3 & 4 were
dead level at the end of the ten rounds, with Team 3 ending up narrow
victors, courtesy of their 3 extra points picked up on the 'Cryptic Pop
Groups' Marathon. Well done ladies, and gentlemen, shall we just say that it
could be a long summer!
Woodrows - hope you enjoyed the sweets.
Just out of interest, if the Quiz had been done on an 'average points per
team member' basis, the Gordons would have won by 3 points from the Pagetts!
Looking back at the Quiz the day after, some answers make interesting
reading.
10 Questions were answered incorrectly by all teams:
Clare Connor was the England captain who took a test hat-trick
Now for the observations:
In the 'Money Matters' round, according to one team, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was the first video played on MTV Europe - what the **** has 'Bohemian Rhapsody' got to do with money????
Now the thank yous:
To Graham Hawes and Trevor Yorke for running the bar in the absence of the regular Bar Steward - they also each bought an entry ticket even though they didn't take part (officially anyway)
With the money from the raffle and the bar
takings, profit on the evening was just shy of £300. Thank you all very
much.
