The
final quiz of the close season took place at the Club on Friday 14th
March. 8 Tables of various sizes attempted to show their knowledge of a
wide range of topics. It was nice to see some new faces amongst the
entrants.
Table 5 established themselves as early front-runners, and despite a spirited challenge from firstly Table 2 and finally Table 4, managed to hold on to their top place all the way through - a considerable improvement on their performance last time out.
Honourable mentions go to Cathy Smith’s Table 4 for their usual strong showing and also to Table 2 who surprised everyone, including probably themselves as well, with a top 3 finish. Matt will hold the bragging rights in the Coleman household until the next time. Steve’s Table 1 performance should scotch the rumours once and for all that the Coleman Clan get a sight of the questions and answers beforehand.
Unfortunately (?) Phil & Andy’s Table finished last (again!), but they got the choccies – perhaps next year we will give them the sweets before the quiz starts so they can enjoy them at their leisure,

Table 2 – Matt, Callum, Ryan, Joe, Stuart & Chris
Table 3 – The Browns
Table 4 – Smiths & Romaines
Table 5 – Johnsons & Windley
Table 6 – The Pagetts
Table 7 – Phil, Andy & Girls Aloud
Table 8 – Woodrows & Pages

11 Questions were answered incorrectly by all Tables:
Rin Tin Tin was the dog that starred in 26 films and signed its own contracts with a paw print.
The family name in ‘2.4 Children’ was Porter
Juliet Bravo was based in Hartley – what is it about our phobia with female police officers – a subject for a whole round in a future quiz, I think.
Arkwright’s Christian name in ‘Open All Hours’ was Albert
The Departed won Best Film Oscar in 2007
West Ham were not the first Premier League Table to win at the Emirates – Arsenal were!
Ian & Greg Chappell were the first brothers to score test centuries in the same innings.
Oliver was the last musical of the 20th Century to win Best Film Oscar
Kuwait City in the ‘Monuments’ Marathon threw everybody
And in the Pictograms Round
Putting 2 & 2 together
Disorderly Conduct
Now to our take on the answers people perhaps wish they hadn’t put.
Surprising how many people who travel by National Express don’t know that they travel by National Express.
A Stewards Enquiry for Table 2 for being the only Table to know that Sly Lovgren was JR Ewing’s secretary. There was no-one on that table old enough to REMEMBER ‘Dallas’.
What ‘White Diamond’ (or even ‘Diamond White’) has to do with Walt Disney is anyone’s guess.
King Kong would be hard pushed to defend some of the goal sizes suggested.
The ‘Lipsmackin’ Pepsi ads were too long ago for some of our younger competitors, it seems
Does Bruce Springstine (????) really sound like Sheryl Crow?
Maid Marion was a fox in the Disney cartoon – some might say the same thing about the recent BBC TV series (but I couldn’t possibly comment)
The Israelites were Desmond Dekker’s backing band, not an Intelligence Service.
We did give all the names for the Sports Personality Marathon – one team (no names, but it’s a Table number that comes after 7) obviously thought we didn’t, as they came up with a couple of answers that weren’t on the list. You can’t help some people can you.
Profit on the night was about £160, with another £200+ taken over the bar. Hope you have enjoyed this winters entertainment – we have enjoyed putting them on. Thanks for all your support. Bentley Quiz Nights will hopefully start again once the 2008 cricket season has been put to bed

As a lot of you will be aware, Bentley Cricket Force enrolled in the
NatWest Cricket Force scheme for the first time in April 2007. This is a
scheme for all cricket clubs throughout the country whereby cricket club
members across the country attend their local club on a particular
weekend and carry out repairs and construction projects to improve the
facilities at their clubs. All manner of projects are carried out, from
repainting of walls to construction of new pavilions (yes, really!)
Bentley has done this previously in the guise of ‘working party’ weekends, which basically have been used to get the club ready for the new season. To be honest, if 10 people turned up, we were lucky. Doing this under the banner of ‘NatWest Cricket Force’ produced an amazing result. So many people turned up that we ran out of paintbrushes and jobs. We realised that we needed to be far more organised for 2008.
We have therefore decided to undertake a major project as our aim for ‘NatWest Cricket Force 2008’, which is due to take place in April 2008. We intend to replace and refurbish our kitchen and our bar storage area, including the floor, and will be approaching local businesses for assistance with materials and finance. The purpose of this letter is to enlist your support for the project. We would also be grateful if you could get in touch with the committee if you feel that you have any special skills that could be used in the project (obviously, with this particular task, plumbing skills would be very useful).
Even if you feel that the main project is not for you, we will still be carrying out all of the normal jobs that need to be done before the new cricket season begins and your assistance with these would still be greatly appreciated.

1st February 2008
The first quiz night of 2008 took place on Friday 1st
February, and again proved to be a very competitive affair. Team 3, led
by Club Secretary Cathy Smith, decided on a change of tactics and played
both Jokers in the first 4 rounds to establish an early substantial lead
and then watched the other teams (notable Teams 4 and 6) chip away at
them all evening. By the end of Round 8, Team 6, The Pagetts, led by 2,
with only 7 points separating the top 3 teams. By Round 9, and taking
the Marathon scores into account, Teams3 and 6 were dead level. So it
was all down to the final round, ‘Alive Alive O’. Team 3 obviously spend
most of their spare time with heads buried in history books as they
scored a very creditable 7, to take the honours by 3 points. It is
debatable whether Team 3 was assisted or hindered by the help offered by
Callum & Ryan, but mention must be made of the fact that the Pagetts
team was only a third of the size of the winning team. Moral victors
perhaps, but points make prizes!
Teams
1 – Phil, Andrew & Friends
2 – Larkins, Peberdy & Monk
3 – Smith, Romaine & Brown
4 – Whiteley, Cozens & Jacobs
5 – Johnsons
6 – Pagetts
7 – Woodrow, Page & Matt Coleman

Now the observations
Thank yous go to Andy & Phil for doing the raffle, and to Andrew for his usual immaculate MC duties – I think we will have to change the raffle tickets though as the colours seem to cause confusion – to Cathy & Karen for helping with the food and the clearing up, to Graham H and Trevor Y for running the bar, and to everyone who donated raffle prizes. Profit on the night was just over £200, with another £250 taken over the bar. Thank you all very much for your support. The final Quiz before the season starts will be around the middle of March – hope to see you all there.
