BENTLEY CC - COLTS NEWS

Friday 8th September 2006 - Colts Presentation Evening
The Junior Colts Presentation Evening was held slightly earlier than in previous years, in order to have a couple of guests to present the trophies.  Unfortunately both Ashley Cowan & Andy Clarke had prior engagements, resulting in them having to leave prior to the presentations beginning!  Instead, we made do with home-grown 'superstars' from the 1st & 2nd Teams, along with the Club President.  There were a large number of awards to be handed out, due to there having been 4 teams playing this year, Under 11s, Under 13 A & B and for the first time, a girls team, so a fair degree of patience was required whilst these were presented. Thanks to all for their consideration and warm appreciation
of the various recipients.  Principal winners were:

Junior Colts awards

Best Colt - Aiden Egalton
Most Improved Colt - Elliot Gray

Girls Awards

Best Batsman - Rebecca Reid
Best Bowler - Clare Woodrow
Most Improved Player - Jenny Naven
Most Promising Newcomer - Hannah Reid

Under 11
Player of the Year - Robert Hyams & Luke Jewers
Most Improved Player - Sam Cross
Batting Award - Ryan Green
Bowling Award - Charlie Yorke
Fielding Award - Greg Larkin
Most Promising Newcomer - David Hickey

Under 13B
Player of the Year - Jake Kavanagh
Most Improved Player - Tom Gosling
Batting Awards - Cian Holland & Ollie Whitlock
Bowling Awards - Matt Rowlinson & Michael Cripps
Fielding Award - Seb Ramsey-Smith

Under 13A
Player of the Year - Philip Coleman
Most Improved Player - James Waring
Batting Awards - Philip Coleman & Rhys Sprules
Bowling Awards - Nick Wilson & Philip Coleman
Fielding Award - Paul Jarvis
Team Player - Andrew Pagett
Commitment Award - Elissa Penketh & Hannah Courtnell

The Jack Petchy Scholarship Awards were presented to Sam Cross (Under 11), Jake Kavanagh (Under 13B), and Andrew Pagett and James Waring (Under 13A).

Every child who played in a match received a certificate and a copy of the seasons statistics for their age group.  At the end, Nick Hammond, the Club President, thanked everyone for their support of the club, and assured everyone present that the income generated is reinvested for the benefit of all of the club members and is NOT spent on
paying players wages, as happens so often these days. He also reminded everyone present to enjoy their time in the colts as time goes by very quickly.

The evening was very well attended, to the extent that the bar took over £800, with another £150+ spent on burgers & sausages. Again, entertainment for the evening was a bouncy castle, bungee run and 'gladiators', provided this year by Kingdom Leisure and paid for by the club.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who contributed towards my voucher - with your approval, I will share it with Steve, Matt & Stuart who have assisted so ably this year.

Tuesday 29th August 2006 - Under 11 Season Update
Well, that season came and went, didn't it. To carry on where I left off at the end of June, we had a very narrow defeat at High Roding, in a game which went down to the last over. If their umpire hadn't called a no ball just as we took a catch, the two run defeat would have been a six run victory. 'If' and 'Only' again! We followed this up by making the highest score by an U11 team since I have been running the section, 313 against Springfield. In a high scoring game, they actually scored more runs than we did, but their loss of 10 wickets against our solitary one proved decisive.  Another close victory over St Anne Line School, this time by 5 runs, and then came a heavy defeat by Hutton, where the presence of their 3 Essex players was significant. We then beat Shenfield with an excellent team performance, with everyone contributing runs, wickets or catches to end the league season winning 3 and losing 4 of our 7 games. To round off the season we had two friendly matches with Brentwood CC, losing the Under 10 Terrier fixture but
winning the Under 11 20 Over game.

We have a team in the Under 11 Mini Matchplay Competition at the County Ground, Chelmsford on Friday 1st September starting at 6.00 pm - this is a chance for the 6 boys selected to experience playing cricket under floodlights. We also have a team in the Under 9 Kwik Cricket Festival at Chelmer Park, Beehive Lane, Chelmsford on Sunday 3rd September, starting at 10.00 am. Anyone who wishes to come along to support either team will be very welcome.

Presentation Evening is on Friday 8th September where, in addition to handing out the 2006 Awards, we will have the usual bouncy castle entertainment and hopefully we will be joined on the evening by some players from the county - this part is out of my hands, so like you, I have got my fingers crossed. Finally, thanks to everyone who supported the Colin Neal Trophy on Bank Holiday Monday.

28th August 2006 - Colin Neal Trophy (Click here for Competition Grid)
Bank Holiday Monday saw the annual Colin Neal Trophy taking place with the format being the same as last year, an inter family double wicket tournament.

Heavy overnight rain had left the main square unplayable, so the artificial wicket was used, resulting in batters and bowlers being unable to use studs. No sooner had the competition started however, than the ground was swamped by a deluge of biblical proportions, resulting in an attempt on the record for ‘Most Number of People inside a small wooden chalet’.

When the rain abated, the competition continued, with matches being reduced to 2 overs a side. Significant 1st round events were the demise of pre-tournament favourites, Matt & Phil Coleman, to the Reid/Windley combo, the rush of blood from the younger Pagett resulting in them snatching defeat from the jaws of victory against Tim & Jacques Pretorius, and the appearance of the only lady adult competitor, Sharon Cross, taking the place of her husband who had ‘a very important football tournament to attend’. It could be a long winter, Tony. Much respect, Sharon!

Onto the second round, with the sister/brother Whiteley combination despatching Steve & Rhys Sprules, Reid & Windley continuing at the expense of the Beaneys, the Pretorius pair removing the Hyams and the Hickeys falling to the Woodrows.

The semi finals saw Reid & Windley in desperate trouble against the Whiteleys, losing 3 early wickets before ‘recovering’ to total –3. The Whiteleys then batted cautiously, with Elise hitting Mark through backward square leg for 4 to clinch the victory and a place in the final against tournament outsiders the Pretorius’ who had removed the Woodrows in the other semi final.

The final, played over 3 overs a side, was a closely fought affair. Batting first, the Whiteleys scored a net 14. Coming into the last over, the Pretorius’s were 3 runs behind with Elise to bowl. Any fears of nerves causing problems were quickly forgotten as Elise bowled 3 dot balls followed by a wicket. 2 singles off the last 2 balls left the Pretorius pairing defeated by 5 runs. Many congratulations, Elise & Lewis, and commiserations to Tim & Jacques.

My thanks go to Martin Larrett & Keith Lawrence for umpiring all day, Christian Lawrence for keeping wicket, Tim Whiteley for ensuring that the right number of fielders were playing in every game, Sharon Coleman & Karen Pagett for running the BBQ in extremely difficult conditions, Brian Pagett for bar & BBQ duties, and Graham Hyams and the Under 15 ‘groundstaff’ for helping to clear up afterwards. Thanks also go to all of the competitors for making the day such a sporting event.

Thursday 29th June 2006 - U11 Season So Far
Given the youth and inexperience of this year's Under 11 squad (only 2 boys having previously played any serious amount of cricket), I always knew that it was going to be difficult for us to compete effectively with more established sides, and this proved to be the case, at least in the early matches. A narrow defeat in the friendly with a much older Little Waltham side was followed by heavy losses in the league to Brentwood & Chelmsford, and a defeat by Old Brentwoods meant that there would be no repeat cup final appearance this year. The experience of playing cricket just by batting, bowling and fielding gained in those matches however proved invaluable when we came up against a Cloghams team that had won its 3 previous matches. A superb all-round team performance saw Bentley emerge victorious by 10 runs. The sharp catch held by Greg Larkin off the first ball of the last over, which could so easily have gone for 4, ended up being the difference between the two sides (the' minus 6' for Cloghams could have been a 'plus 4' with the boundary). This was followed by an excellent game with Martin Larrett's St Anne Line School team (containing 3 Bentley regulars) at Coxtie Green, which ended with the home side sneaking home by 7 runs.  At the time of writing more than 25 children have already played competitive cricket at Under 11 for Bentley, most of whom will still be eligible for the age group next year. We may not win the league, but we could have a big say in who does. Once again, the support of parents, carers etc has been fantastic, where we invariably outnumber the opposition, home and away.  Please see the 'Colts Results' page for more details on the matches.

Tuesday 10th January 2006 - Winter Nets
The Mini Matchplay Festival took place at The County Ground in Chelmsford as a curtain raiser to the Under 16 Matchplay Final.
As usual, 32 clubs provided teams of 6 Under 11s to play three games of Kwik Cricket on the outfield. Bentley were represented by Philip Coleman, Frankie Barrett, Rebecca Reid, Cian Holland, Stephen Naven & Andrew Pagett, and were placed in a group with Springfield, Gidea Park & Romford and South Woodham Ferrers, on a pitch in front of the main pavilion.
The tone was set in the very first over against Springfield with Holland retiring after the first four balls (4, 4, 4 & 4!) which led to a final score of 93 - 2, the biggest by any club in the festival. Good accurate bowling meant that with a score of 57, Springfield never threatened to win.
Next up was Gidea Park & Romford. Again batting first, Bentley set an imposing target of 78 in their 5 overs. The bowling was again impressive, as GP&R were dismissed for 26, with the fielding highlight being a boundary catch under considerable pressure by Andrew Pagett.
The last game was against South Woodham Ferrers, and Coleman matched Holland with a 4 ball retirement (6, 4, 0 & 6). This led to the 2nd biggest score of the event, 85-4. For the 3rd time, a team couldn't get to grips with Bentley's accurate bowling, falling 47 runs short.
Overall, it was an outstanding display of batting, bowling & fielding by 6 excellent cricketers.
No prizes for winning the group, however every player taking part in the event was presented with a medal by Essex CCC.

Sunday 25th September 2005 - Mini Matchplay

Friday 23rd September 2005 - Colts Presentation Evening
Heavy afternoon rain gave way to a sunny, if not altogether warm, evening which meant that a repeat of last years drizzly conditions were avoided. As last year, the Club Committee funded the hire of the Bouncy Castle, Pole Joust and Bungee Run, provided by KBL Event Hire, and these proved a great success with all ages, to the extent that the power had to be switched off at 11.30 pm, to enable people to go home to bed. Thanks here to Brian Knight & Dave Guthrie for the floodlighting. One of the highlights of the evening proved to be the 'Battle of the Giants' on the Joust, between Laurence Pulford & Adam Lucas!

The trophies were presented by Andy Clarke (Essex CCC), and principle winners were

Under 11
Player of the Year - Philip Coleman
Most Improved Player - Andrew Pagett
Batting Awards - Frankie Barrett & George Bateson
Bowling Awards - Rebecca Reid & Clare Woodrow
Fielding Awards - Robert Hyams & Charlie Yorke
Most Promising Newcomers - Jenny & Stephen Naven

Junior Colts awards
Best Colt - Patrick Hook-Willers
Most Improved Colts - James Smith & Sean Whelan

Most Improved Player - Elliot Hardy
Best Fielder - Jack Moxley
Bowling Awards - Nick Wilson, Oliver Beaney & Philip Coleman

Essex Girls Representative Medals
Under 12 - Hannah Courtnell & Rebecca Reid
Under 11 - Sarah Cozens & Elise Whitely

The Jack Petchy Scholarship Awards were presented to George Bateson & Stephen Naven (Under 11) and Oliver Beaney (Under 13).

Every child who played in a match received a certificate and a copy of the seasons statistics for their age group.

Gifts of vouchers and alcohol were presented to Mark Windley, Laurence Pulford, Trevor Yorke, Steve & Matt Coleman, Mark & Jack Woodrow, Stuart Doncaster, Steve Pagett, Tom Stimpson, Keith Lawrence, Trevor Woodrow & Tim Whiteley in recognition of all of their work at Friday night training and matches.
Bottles of wine were also presented to Coral, Jenny, Brian & Dave for their sterling efforts in providing the BBQ all summer.

It was also very nice to see so many parents & guardians for the last time outdoors until next April.

(PS - many thanks to everyone who chipped in towards the purchase of my bat - I promise I will (try to) use it, once someone shows me which end of it to hold! Brian)

2nd September 2005
Bentley Under 11s take on their Chelmsford counterparts in the final of the Central Essex Cricket Board U11 Cup at Chelmer Park, Beehive Lane, Chelmsford on Sunday 4th September. Unfortunately, neither the Board nor the hosts have seen fit to provide us with any information regarding Finals Day other than the Under 11 final apparently starts at 2.30 pm. It is extremely disappointing therefore that the children taking part have not been able to enjoy the full experience of getting to a final.
Anyone who wants to come along on Sunday to support the girls and boys in their efforts will be very welcome.

31st August 2005

The annual Colin Neal Trophy was held at the club on Bank Holiday Monday. A new format was tried this year, a double wicket knockout tournament involving colts and their dads (or another older member of their family).
Thankfully the day was sunny and warm and 16 pairs battled it out under cloudless skies. The Colemans were an early casualty, a damaged finger causing them to withdraw, and the Pagetts also fell at the first hurdle.
Into the quarter finals, with the Navens despatching the Courtnells, the Bateson/Leak combination disposing of the Lawrences, the scratch pairing of Reid & Hawes winning against the Woodrows and the Crispins beating the Sprules. Two well fought semi finals left us with a final match up of Naven versus Crispin, with the Naven combination coming out on top. Well done, Steve & Charlie, and commiserations, Ellis & Ian.

These events cannot take place without people being prepared to give up some of their time to ensure that the day runs smoothly. Thanks therefore go to Martin Larrett, Dave Guthrie, Gavin Hammond, Keith Lawrence & Steve Sprules for umpiring, Steve Pagett for wicketkeeping all day, Steve Coleman for running the bar most of the afternoon & Brian, Coral, Jenny & Dave for their usual excellent barbecue. No doubt there were severe recriminations in many of the cars on the way home (no, children CANNOT divorce their parents! - or vice versa!) but, I think, a good time was had by all.

As the tournament overran somewhat, the Ladies vs Gents Rounders Match took place whilst the semi finals were going on. This resulted in (yet another) win for the Men. No surprise there, then.

26th July 2005

Bentley Under 11s beat their Brentwood counterparts by 32 runs on Sunday 24th July 2005 in the Central Essex Cricket Board Under 11 Cup Semi Final (see match details under 'Results').  They now go on to face either Chelmsford or Herongate on Finals Day at Chelmer Park on Sunday 4th September 2005. Full details of the final will be posted in due course

18th July 2005
The Under 15s are riding high in U15 Division A (at least Bentley are still trying to play colts cricket at this age group). Hopefully a league title is at hand for an excellent bunch of cricketers. It is turning into a disappointing season for the U13s after so much success in recent years, both in the Central District competition and the Peter Coe Cup. Good results in their remaining league matches could see them finishing 3rd, or even 2nd.
The U11As are remaining competitive in their division, although off the pace for the title. They are however Bentley's only survivor in the cup competitions, through to a semi final against Brentwood. The U11Bs are facing their usual problem of being a B Team up against a lot of A Teams.
They are nevertheless enjoying the opportunity to play cricket and, having played both of the teams above them, should improve on their current position (if anyone ever turns up to play them!)

7th June 2005
Updated Colts League tables show that the Bentley Colt section are currently flying high with the U11A, U11B & U15 teams all top of their respective divisions, and the U13 team second of theirs.

23rd May 2005
All Colts results and U11 match reports will now be shown on the website as will the League tables, and Colt Cup competition details as and when supplied by the League and Cup organises respectively.
